Though Sibu was officially founded in 2009, the origins of the brand date back more than 20 years prior to their official launch.
In the 1980's, Sibu founder Bruce McMullin was traveling on business in throughout India, Malaysia, and Singapore, establishing an import-export business based on providing chelated minerals as a raw materials for nutritional products manufactured in the US. During the time he was working in the area, he met dozens of incredible people, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Bruce was particularly taken by the people. He inquired with one of his local friends about the welfare of the children in a country recognized for enduring some of the most extreme poverty on the planet.
He was told that many of the children were put up for adoption because their biological parents could not offer them a good life. Shortly after returning home from that trip Bruce spoke with his wife, Jean about the possibility of adopting a child from the area. Without a moment’s hesitation, Jean wholeheartedly agreed.
After an arduous two year process, the McMullin family was notified that a baby girl was selected as a match for them. They quickly made the travel accommodations from Salt Lake City, UT to New Dehli, India to meet their one-month old baby girl, Minda.
18 years later, the McMullin family - with Minda and their 4 other children - made the journey back to India to explore where Minda's life began all those years ago. It was on that trip that Bruce encountered the Sea Buckthorn Berry, otherwise known as, "the Holy Fruit of the Himalayas".
He learned about the many benefits of the superfruit while in India, and continued his studies when returning home to the US. The more Bruce learned, the more he became excited about the impact and benefits that this tiny berry could bring to the Western World.
For more than 9 years, Bruce, and other members of the McMullin family (including Minda) have worked diligently to build a business that not only supports their family, but supports the families of a whole community high in the Himalayan Mountains.
While our world is now more connected than ever, few companies serve the global community in such a unique and inspiring way.
